At this point I think I'm a bit obsessed with materiality and authenticity. I like the idea of working with, rather than over the clay body; and rightly or wrongly a paint feels inauthentic to me. Similarly glazes feel the same on the whole .. maybe I'm a bit OCD.
One of the large pieces I produced fairly recently was painted in three colours of slip (white, black and reactive), and I agonised over how to finish it for stoneware firing.
Eventually settled on a thin transparent glaze over the slip and the transformation was pretty intense .. rich blacks, browns and an off white.
In terms of terra sig .. the texture and blending involved really appeals. I think that feels very unique, and that's the reason for that obsession.
